WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT

I really hate to post this, but I can't just click "mark as read" and move on. This is happening right now in our world, and it casts shame on the human race. Be forewarned - these pictures are horrific. They may make you angry. They may make you cry. They WILL upset you.

The Surabaya Zoo is in the news once again because early this morning a lion was found hanged to death in its cage.

The "zoo of death" claimed its latest victim, an 18 month old, male, African lion named Michael. The Jakarta Globe is reporting that Michael was found strangled in his cage after his head became stuck between two steel cables. Zoo management stated that the lion must have gotten its head stuck between the cables while "playing around."

A zoo spokesperson explained that the zoo used steel cables to secure the cage so zookeepers did not have to manually open or close the cage door with their hands as a safety precaution to prevent the keepers from being injured.

Police raced to the scene only to find the body gone and its whereabouts unknown.

The MailOnline article points out, "The tragedy comes just 24 hours after it was learned that a wildebeest died in its enclosure from a stomach problem, although the zoo said that the wet weather was partly to blame."

The Surabaya Zoo, located in the city of Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia, was brought to international attention last year when MailOnline published an expose about the zoo's practices.

I chose the title of this blog from the tagline that accompanied all the articles about Surabaya Zoo.

Right now while I'm typing, I've got a cat on my lap, a cat lying right next to me, another cat at the foot of the bed, and a cat sitting on a chair in front of the partially opened window. They surround me with comfort and companionship and laughter and love. I was going to comment further about why anyone would mistreat wild or domestic animals, but then I thought, why bother? I'm either preaching to the choir or howling into the wind.
